As the development of new aircraft or helicopter transparencies cannot be conducted without the performance of various tests, Saint-Gobain Sully has acquired the capability to carry out internally those, which are the most usually required for a full qualification.
The on-site Sully qualification facilities include:
Bird impact testing is performed in accordance to standard method ASTM F330. Projectile weight and velocity, temperatures and some other test parameters can be recorded. Projectile maximum weight is 1.81 kg (4 lbs). Maximum available speed is 220 m/s (430 knots). Upon request high speed videos are available. The test articles may be heated up to 60°C (140°F) or cooled down to 40°C ( 40°F).
The hailstone cannon has been designed to fire ice balls, as well as various small hard missiles. Hailstone testing is performed in accordance to standard method ASTM F320. Projectile weight and velocity, temperatures and some other test parameters can be recorded. Maximum available speed is 220 m/s (430 knots) for 1-inch diameter ice balls and 120 m/s (235 knots) for 2-inch diameter ice balls. Upon request high speed videos are available. The test articles may be heated up to 60°C (140°F) or cooled down to 40°C (40°F).
The chamber can be programmed to reproduce an equipment life time constraints: pressure loads, hot (+100°C max) and cold (-60°C min) temperature, defogging and/or deicing capabilities, air speed.
Thanks to those on-site facilities and with the expertise of our Quality team, Saint-Gobain Sully Aerospace is enabled to manufacture certified transparencies.
